UPSON PRISONER RECAPTURED

An Upson County prisoner found it doesn’t pay to run from law enforcement officers. Cardell Stewart, 24, was being escorted from the Upson County Magistrate Court Wednesday morning when he broke away from his escort and ran.

Approximately 25 officers from the Sheriff’s Office, Thomaston Police, Narcotics Task Force, and Department of Corrections K responded and within an hour, Stewart was located in an old barn at South Green Street and Cedarwood Lane by a Sheriff’s deputy. He is now back in the Upson County Jail.

Stewart was facing charges of burglary, possession of marijuana less than an ounce, disorderly conduct, and a probation violation. His attempted escape will lead to other charges being added.

Upson County Sheriff Dan Kilgore also organized a massive drug sweep at Upson-Lee High School Wednesday, using drug detection dogs from a number of neighboring law enforcement agencies to sniff for drugs at the school. Kilgore and the Thomaston-Upson Board of Education reached an agreement last year in which the Sheriff’s Office will do several unannounced drug dog sweeps at schools in the system during the year. Kilgore said no drugs were found during the sweep Wednesday.
