#Chappel confronted the men and a fight ensued, Davis said. “They actually got into a fight and during the fight, he was thrown over the rail,” Davis said.

#Davis said two of the five men were armed with shanks, and that Chappel was robbed of food and personal items.

#An autopsy on Chappel performed Friday morning concluded the man died of blunt force trauma caused by the fall, the GBI said.

#The five charged in Chappel’s death are: William Woodrow Wells, 21, of Louisville, Ga.; Dante Ray Myles, 27, of Covington; Niko Lamar Swann, 23, of Atlanta; Demarcus D. Crew, 19, of Elberton; and Justin O’Neal Clinkscales, 27, of Hartwell.

#Gwendolyn Hogan, a spokeswoman for the Georgia Department of Corrections, told the Jackson Progress-Argus in an e-mail Tuesday afternoon that inmates in the dorm are allowed to move freely Sundays through Thursdays until 11:30 p.m., and later on Fridays, Saturdays and state holidays. She also confirmed that there was one correctional officer present at the time of the incident.

#She said in the e-mail that the inmates involved have been segregated.

#Department of Corrections records show Chappel, of Albany, was serving a sentence of life without parole on a 2010 murder charge from Dougherty County.

#The Albany Herald newspaper reports that Chappel was serving a life sentence in the pipe-beating death of 54-year-old Frankie Carr. The newspaper reports Chappel was arrested in connection with the death Nov. 12, 2010 in Atlanta.
